Around 1.33 million (Federal Network Agency) systems are now recorded in the Marktstammdatenregister, and tens of thousands are added every month. The reason is simple: a plug-in solar device is affordable, quickly installed and noticeably lowers the electricity bill. Since Solar Package I and the new standard VDE-AR-N 4105 in its March 2026 version, clearer rules apply - above all the binding limit of 800 volt-amperes (VDE-AR-N 4105) for the inverter. Why a Balcony Solar System Pays Off

A balcony solar system consists of one or two solar panels and a small inverter that converts the generated direct current into standard alternating current. This electricity flows directly through the socket into your house network and is used immediately wherever appliances are running - fridge, router, television or charger. So what the panels deliver during the day does not have to be bought expensively from the grid. That is exactly the appeal: every self-generated kilowatt-hour replaces grid electricity and shows up directly on the annual bill. Unlike a large rooftop system, a plug-in solar device needs neither scaffolding nor a building application, is ready to operate within a few hours and can simply be taken along when you move. The fact that 1.33 million (Federal Network Agency) households have now chosen this path shows how uncomplicated the entry has become.

Who benefits most

The biggest savings go to households with a noticeable base load throughout the day - for instance anyone working from home or with a constant consumption from refrigerators and freezers, an aquarium or a heat pump. But an average household, too, covers part of its standby and continuous consumption with a balcony solar system. The only important thing is to use the generated electricity when the sun is shining - then the system works most economically.

What Applies in 2026: the 800 VA Limit

With Solar Package I and the connection standard VDE-AR-N 4105 in its March 2026 version, the rules for plug-in solar have become considerably simpler and more uniform. The key point: since 1 March 2026 the inverter may feed a maximum of 800 volt-amperes (VDE-AR-N 4105) into the house network. This limit refers explicitly to the feed-in power of the inverter, not to the panels. The solar panels themselves may be considerably stronger - up to 2000 watts (Solar Package I) of module power is allowed. That sounds contradictory but makes sense: stronger panels also deliver more under a cloudy sky, in winter and in the fringe hours of the day, while the inverter caps the peak at 800 volt-amperes. This way you harvest more yield over the year without exceeding the limit.

Keep using an existing system

If you already operate an older balcony solar system with 600 volt-amperes, you do not have to replace anything - existing systems enjoy legitimate-expectation protection and may keep running. A look is still worthwhile: on many inverters the 800 volt-amperes can be unlocked via a software update. Step 1: Mount the Panels Safely

The most common question before buying is: where to put the panels? Classically they hang on the outside of the balcony railing, but they can just as well be attached to the facade, on a flat roof, on the garage wall or, with a mounting frame, on a terrace or lawn. Two things are decisive: a secure fastening and a good orientation. Panels facing south deliver the highest total yield, but an east-west orientation spreads the yield more evenly across the day and often suits your own consumption better. A tilt angle between 30 and 45 degrees is a good compromise at our latitudes. Because a panel weighs several kilograms and is exposed to the wind, the bracket must sit firmly - especially on upper floors, a fall-proof installation is a must.

  1. Determine location and orientation: as little shading as possible, south or east-west.
  2. Choose a suitable bracket for railing, facade, flat roof or mounting frame.
  3. Fasten the panels fall-proof and wind-resistant - especially carefully on upper floors.
  4. Lay the cables protected, with no crushing or chafing points at edges.
  5. Mount the inverter protected from rain and splash water and in the shade.

Step 2: Connect It Safely

Once everything is mounted, the inverter is connected to the panels and coupled to the socket via a connection cable. Since the new standard, connection through a standard earthed household plug is explicitly accepted - a special feed-in plug is no longer mandatory. Even so: a balcony solar system belongs on its own, easily reachable circuit, and power strips or extension leads are off-limits. Ideal is a socket whose condition a specialist has checked beforehand, because electricity flows through it continuously in both directions. If old wiring, an unclear fuse box or doubts about the socket are involved, a certified electrician should take on the connection or at least approve it. Safety comes before convenience here.

Definitely avoid these mistakes

Two things are risky: the connection via an overloaded power strip and running several plug-in solar devices on one circuit at the same time without checking the wiring. Self-made cabling, too, or an inverter without the required grid-disconnection protection that shuts the system off immediately when the grid fails, has no place on the house network. When in doubt, have the connection checked by a professional - it costs little and rules out the greatest dangers.

Step 3: Registration in the Marktstammdatenregister

The good news first: registration has been greatly simplified since Solar Package I. It is done exclusively in the Marktstammdatenregister of the Federal Network Agency, is free of charge and takes only a few minutes online. A separate report to the grid operator is no longer needed - the register informs it automatically (Federal Network Agency). Important is the deadline: the balcony solar system must be registered no later than one month (Federal Network Agency) after commissioning. For the registration you only need a few details about the system - location, power of the inverter and the panels, and the commissioning date. Anyone unsure which fields to fill in and how quickly gets lost in technical terms; this is exactly where we are happy to take over the registration completely.

  2. Record the system as a plug-in solar device with its performance data.
  3. Enter location, commissioning date and inverter power.
  4. Check the details and complete the registration within one month.
  5. Save the confirmation - it is the proof of proper registration.

Reported to the grid operator automatically

Operators used to have to register their balcony solar system separately with the grid operator as well. That has been dropped: the data from the Marktstammdatenregister is forwarded to the responsible grid operator (Federal Network Agency). It then takes care of the meter - more on that shortly. For you this means: one form, one register, done.

Is a Battery Worth It?

A balcony solar system generates electricity mainly around midday, when many households consume little. Whatever is not used at that moment flows off into the public grid - usually without payment. This is exactly where a battery comes in: it buffers the surplus midday electricity and releases it again in the evening, when lights, stove and television are running. This significantly increases the share of self-used solar power. Whether the investment pays off depends on your own consumption profile, the electricity price and the purchase costs. For households that are rarely at home during the day, a battery can make the difference; anyone who already has a high base load during the day often manages without one.

First shift consumption, then store

Before buying a battery, the simplest lever is worthwhile: move large loads into the sunny hours. Anyone who starts the washing machine, dishwasher or charger at midday via a timer or app uses the solar power directly and needs expensive grid electricity less often. How Much Electricity Does It Really Deliver?

The yield depends on orientation, shading, location and weather - so blanket promises should be treated with caution. As a rough guide, a well-oriented 800-watt system in Germany delivers a decent amount of electricity over the year, a noticeable part of which can be used directly. What matters for the monetary value is not the pure generation but the self-consumption: only the electricity you use yourself replaces expensive grid power. Shading from neighbouring buildings, trees or a railing can noticeably reduce the yield, while a clear south orientation gets the maximum out of it. Realistically, a cleanly planned system pays for itself over several years - and afterwards produces virtually free electricity. A balcony solar system thus fits a conscious approach to technology, just as it often pays off to use existing devices longer and, for instance, make a slow PC fast again without buying new.

A balcony solar system is not a power plant but a clever buffer against the base load: it lowers exactly the kilowatt-hours that would otherwise be bought from the grid around the clock.

Tenants, Owners and the HOA

Balcony solar systems are expressly intended for tenants too - and the legal situation has improved considerably. Since 2024, plug-in solar devices count among the privileged measures: landlords and homeowner associations can have a say in how it is attached, but they may in principle no longer forbid it without a good reason. For mounting on the facade or railing, tenants should still seek a conversation with the landlord in advance and agree on the planned fastening. In a homeowner association a resolution that governs the visual design and the secure fastening makes sense. Anyone who clarifies this early avoids later trouble - and systems mounted so they can be removed can be taken along without problem when moving out.

Many modern inverters show via an app how much electricity the panels are currently delivering and how much adds up over the day. That does not only motivate but also helps to move consumption into the sunny hours.
