In most households, putting the fibre connection into service is done within the home-visit flat rate of 79 € (up to 60 minutes): connect fibre modem and router, check telephony, reconnect devices. If the Wi-Fi for the whole house is to be rebuilt at the same time, the fixed-price package Wi-Fi & router for 99 € fits better. Each further hour 69 €, travel within 10 km around Nordstemmen included, beyond that 0.50 € per kilometre.

Fibre is arriving in more and more streets in the Leine valley. The gigabit strategy of the German federal government foresees nationwide fibre connections by 2030 (Federal Government, gigabit strategy). For households that means: at some point the appointment arrives at which the copper cable is retired. The construction team lays the fibre into the house, installs the handover point and leaves again. What comes next surprises many people: the old router no longer fits, the phone stays silent, the Wi-Fi suddenly has a different name and the TV cannot find the streaming apps. That is exactly where we step in. We from Technik daheim come to your home, connect the fibre modem and router, move your telephony over, reconnect all devices and explain calmly what has changed. You can read how the switch works technically in our guide on fibre instead of copper. If reception is not equally good everywhere afterwards, whole-home Wi-Fi with mesh helps. Matching services are Wi-Fi optimization, the router setup and setting up smart TV and streaming.

A typical fibre switch in a household: from the house connection to the appointment at which everything runs again. Illustrative example, timings differ between providers.

What We Handle for Your Fibre Switch

Your provider makes sure the fibre reaches the house. Everything after that is up to you, and that is exactly the part that costs nerves in everyday life. We take it over completely: from connecting the router through telephony to the devices that have to go back online afterwards. You will find an overview of everything we offer under services, current fixed prices are listed under prices.

Connect modem and router

We connect your router to the fibre modem, enter the access details and check that the connection is stable. If your old router no longer fits, we tell you honestly before you buy anything.

Move telephony over

We store your phone numbers in the router, re-register cordless handsets and test incoming and outgoing calls together with you before we leave.

Set up Wi-Fi again

On request you keep your previous Wi-Fi name and familiar password. Then you do not have to enter anything again on phone, tablet or TV.

Reconnect all devices

TV, printer, robot vacuum, voice assistant, cameras: we go through the devices that need to be back online and connect them together with you.

Check the speed

We measure what arrives at the router and in the individual rooms. That way you can see in black and white whether the new line really reaches your living room.

Everything clearly explained

At the end we walk through what has changed and, on request, write down the most important details. That way you can find everything again later.

Copper and Fibre: What Really Changes at Home

From the Old Connection to the New One, in Plain Words

Why the switch is more than a new cable

With the old connection, the internet came into the house over the copper telephone line. The router hung on the telephone socket, the phone often right next to it. With fibre, the signal arrives as light and is converted into a normal network signal at the network termination unit, the so-called ONT. The router is then no longer connected to the telephone socket but to that unit via a network cable. That sounds like a small difference, but it has consequences: a router without a matching port cannot be reused, the telephone socket in the hallway has had its day, and the router's position often shifts to wherever the modem sits, so frequently into the cellar or the utility room. That is exactly where the most common problem after the switch comes from: the line is fast, but the Wi-Fi upstairs in the bedroom is worse than before. That is why we do not just look at the connection but at the whole home.

  • The router connects to the fibre modem, no longer to the telephone socket
  • Phone calls run through the router, classic analogue sockets disappear
  • Where the router stands decides the Wi-Fi quality in your rooms
  • Old devices on the telephone line need a solution of their own

The Most Common Stumbling Blocks After the Switch

From our appointments we know the points where things almost always get stuck. None of them is dramatic, but each one quickly costs half a day without help. If you know in advance what is coming, you can approach much of it calmly. How to get rid of dead spots afterwards is described in our guide on slow Wi-Fi and dead spots at home.

The old router no longer fits

Many routers from the copper era have no matching port for the fibre modem. We check your device and tell you whether it can be reused or not. Help with setting up the new device is available under router setup.

Wi-Fi suddenly falls short

If the modem sits in the cellar, the router moves with it. That changes coverage throughout the house. With a network cable, a second access point or a mesh system we get that under control, more on that under Wi-Fi optimization.

The phone stays silent

Cordless handsets have to be registered on the new router and phone numbers assigned correctly. We take care of that and test a call in both directions with you so you know everything works.

Devices on the old telephone line

An emergency call unit, a fax machine or an alarm system may have been plugged straight into the telephone socket. Such devices need a solution of their own. We look at the connections and discuss with you what needs doing before the old line is switched off.

Important: telephony now needs electricity

With a fibre connection, calls run through the router. If the power goes out, the landline phone stops working too. For emergencies there should therefore be a charged mobile phone in the house. If you use an emergency call device, please clarify with the provider of that device what applies to your connection. We set up and explain the technology, but we do not advise on medical emergency call systems.

How Your Appointment Works at Your Place

We work in a fixed order so that nothing is forgotten at the end. You do not have to prepare anything except your provider's paperwork. If you are unsure whether the connection is ready, give us a short call and we will clarify it on the phone. How an appointment with us generally works is also described under contact.

Have Your Fibre Connection Put Into Service

We come to you, connect router and telephony and reconnect your devices. Home-visit flat rate 79 € up to 60 minutes, travel within 10 km included.

What to Have Ready Before the Appointment

The more complete the paperwork, the quicker we are finished. You do not need to understand any of it, it is enough if the documents and devices are within reach. If you like, put the remote controls next to them so we can sort out TV and streaming in one go, see smart TV and streaming.

  • Order confirmation or contract documents from your provider
  • Access details, line identifier or the letter containing your access information
  • A list of your phone numbers if several numbers are in use
  • The new router, if it has already been delivered, including power supply and cables
  • Your cordless phones and their charging stations
  • An overview of the devices that need to go back on Wi-Fi, verbally is fine too

Do It Yourself, Hotline or Home Visit?

Compared factually so you can judge which route suits your situation.

Our approach

Home visit from Technik daheim

  • Someone actually looks at cellar, cable routes and living rooms
  • Router, telephony and devices done in one appointment
  • Fixed price from 79 €, travel within 10 km included
  • One personal contact you can reach again later

Your provider's hotline

  • Responsible for the line and the contract
  • Waiting times and changing contact people
  • Your living room stays invisible over the phone
  • Third-party devices in the household are rarely covered

Connecting it yourself

  • Costs nothing but time
  • Instructions assume technical vocabulary
  • Telephony and phone numbers are the most common stumbling block
  • A badly placed router makes the Wi-Fi worse

What the Appointment Costs

You learn the price before the appointment so there are no surprises. Which package fits depends on whether only the connection is put into service or whether the Wi-Fi for the whole house is to be built up at the same time. You can find all packages at a glance under prices.

Two appointments in one

If somebody is coming anyway, it pays to take care of other open points at the same time: reconnecting the printer (see printer setup), sorting out the study (see home office setup) or catching up on the backup (see data backup). That saves a second trip.

What Typical Fibre Appointments Look Like

Modem in the cellar
Starting point
After the switch the router stood next to the modem in the cellar and hardly any Wi-Fi reached the upper floor.
Measure
Ran a network cable to the ground floor and set up a second access point.
Result
Stable reception in every room without a visible cable running through the house.
The phone stayed silent
Starting point
The internet worked immediately, but the cordless phones no longer rang.
Measure
Stored the phone numbers in the router, re-registered three handsets and tested the assignment.
Result
Calls come through again and the answering machine works as usual.
Old router
Starting point
The existing router had no matching port for the fibre modem.
Measure
Checked together which device is really needed, then set it up and kept the Wi-Fi name.
Result
Nothing had to be re-entered on phones and TV.
