A robot mower is unpacked and standing on the lawn within half an hour. Whether it then does its rounds reliably depends almost entirely on the setup: on where the charging station goes, on a clean map of the garden, on well-planned no-go zones and above all on the hours during which the machine is allowed to run. This is exactly where the problems we see most often on home visits begin. The mower gets stuck on a slope, loses its connection to the app, drives into a flower bed or is out at dusk, when hedgehogs come into the garden to forage. The West European hedgehog has been listed as near threatened on the international Red List since October 2024 (IUCN Red List), and in residential areas the German outdoor equipment noise regulation sets fixed quiet hours (Umweltbundesamt). This guide walks through the initial setup step by step, from the charging station through mapping, WLAN and no-go zones to the mowing schedule, theft protection and winter storage, and explains what to watch for on safety and legal grounds.

Why the setup decides everything
A robot mower works on the principle of many small cuts. It does not shorten the lawn by several centimetres once a week; it takes off a few millimetres on every run. For that to work, the machine has to be allowed to run regularly, it has to find its way back to the charging station, and it must not keep getting stuck in the same places. All three points are decided in the first two hours of setup – afterwards, most of it can only be corrected with considerable effort.
The second reason is more serious. A robot mower moves close to the ground through a habitat where hedgehogs, toads, slow worms and fledglings spend their evenings. In Germany the West European hedgehog is on the early-warning list of the Red List of mammals (Bundesamt für Naturschutz), and close to one third of native mammal species are threatened in their populations (Bundesamt für Naturschutz). Internationally the species was classified as near threatened for the first time in October 2024 because populations have fallen by 16 to 33 percent within ten years, depending on the country (IUCN Red List). In Flanders and in Bavaria the decline was around 50 percent (IUCN Red List). Setting the machine up properly is therefore also a question of animal welfare, not just of convenience.
Two hours that pay off
The right spot for the charging station
The charging station is the fixed point of the whole system. Every run starts here, and the machine has to find its way back when the battery runs low, when it rains and at the end of the mowing window. A poorly chosen spot leads to aborted runs, overheated batteries and, in winter, moisture damage to the contacts.
Shade instead of a south wall
A partly shaded spot protects the battery and the electronics. Direct midday sun against a heated house wall noticeably shortens charging cycles and bleaches the housing.
Level ground
The station belongs on a horizontal, firm surface. A slope or soft turf under the base plate means the contacts do not meet cleanly and docking fails.
Power and cable routing
The power supply needs an outdoor socket or a weather-protected feed. Cables belong in a protective conduit or under an edge so that neither the mower nor the lawn trimmer catches them.
Leave roughly two to three metres of clear approach in front of the station so the machine can drive in straight. Tight corners behind shrubs look tidy but cost time and battery every day. If your garden has narrow passages, check the width against the manufacturer's specification before mounting anything – with cable systems, moving the station later means relaying part of the boundary.
Rain, splash water and leaves
Mapping: boundary wire or wireless navigation
Two designs part ways at the mapping stage. Classic machines use a boundary wire that encloses the mowing area and is pinned into the ground. Newer machines navigate wirelessly using satellite positioning with a reference antenna on the house, sometimes supported by cameras and distance sensors. In its test of 23 March 2026 Stiftung Warentest examined 14 robot mowers, 8 of them without a boundary wire (Stiftung Warentest) – so the wireless design is no longer a niche topic.
Both routes have their strengths. The wire is insensitive to trees, house walls and clouds, but it takes effort to lay and to change later. Wireless navigation is adjusted in minutes, but the reference antenna needs a clear view of the sky. Under dense tree canopies, in narrow courtyards and right against tall house walls the positioning can become imprecise; many machines compensate with sensors, but the result depends heavily on the property.

On sloping ground, take an honest look at the data sheet before you buy. The manufacturer's figure for maximum gradient applies to dry, short grass. On damp ground, moss or long growth the real value is lower. Where the mower keeps spinning its wheels, it usually helps more to define the slope as its own zone with a different driving direction than to keep lowering the cutting height.
Round the corners, respect the edges
Getting WLAN out into the garden
Almost every modern robot mower is controlled through an app, and many functions such as schedules, no-go zones, location tracking and firmware updates run over the home network. On our home visits, the most common reason for a “device offline” message is not a defect but weak WLAN coverage at the charging station (Projekterfahrung). Solid outer walls, metal fences, greenhouses and thermal glazing damp the signal considerably.
Check coverage before mounting anything: hold a smartphone at the planned spot for the station and see how stable the connection is there. If the signal is not enough, a mesh point in a room facing the garden, an outdoor access point under the canopy or – for garden sheds with power – a link over the existing house wiring will help. - Check signal strength at the planned location of the charging station, not just at the patio door
- Many machines connect only to the 2.4 GHz band – if both networks share a name, separate the bands for the setup
- Avoid placing the router or mesh point behind a radiator recess, a metal cabinet or thermal glazing
- Do not use the guest network for setup, as device-to-device communication is often blocked there
- After setup, watch for a week whether connection drops occur at particular times of day
- For a garden shed or carport, check whether a link over the power line or an outdoor access point makes more sense
Network first, mower second
No-go zones for pond, beds and the hedgehog corner
No-go zones are the part of the setup most people underestimate. They protect not only plants and play equipment but also animals and the mower itself. Unlike a robot vacuum indoors, conditions outside change with every season: a bed that was empty in April is full in June, and a brush pile can become a hedgehog shelter from autumn onwards.
- Leave out the pond, stream and water butt area generously, including the sloping bank
- Fence off beds, raised beds and freshly sown areas with a clear zone instead of relying on obstacle detection
- Block the sandpit, trampoline, paddling pool and playhouse permanently, even when nothing is standing there
- Mark brush, leaf and compost piles as hedgehog shelters and have the mower keep a generous distance
- Leave out root flares of old trees, drain gratings and ground inlets, where blades and wheels take damage
- Keep garden furniture, the barbecue and the washing line out of the path: define a fixed zone or clear them before the mowing window
For hedgehogs there is a simple rule of thumb: whatever offers shelter is also inhabited. Dense hedges, brush piles, gaps under terraces and tall grass along the fence are typical daytime hiding places. Leave a strip of uncut grass there. It costs little lawn but creates a refuge. Note also that the German Federal Nature Conservation Act prohibits cutting back hedges, living fences and shrubs from 1 March to 30 September and only allows gentle shaping and maintenance cuts (Bundesnaturschutzgesetz) – so those edge strips usually stay in place anyway.
A few clearly defined no-go zones work better than a dozen small exceptions. Anyone who protects every single item ends up with a lawn full of islands.
Cutting height, schedule and weather pauses
Cutting height is the most effective lever for a healthy lawn and for fewer conflicts with wildlife. Set it too low and you get moss, brown patches in summer and a mower that keeps grounding on roots. Start high in the first week and lower the setting step by step until the cut looks right. In high summer the height goes back up, because longer blades shade the soil and hold moisture.
For the schedule the rule is: planned runs instead of continuous operation. Two to three runs per week in a fixed time window are enough for most domestic gardens, provided the area matches the machine class (Projekterfahrung). That protects the battery and the blades, keeps the surface evenly short and makes the machine predictable for neighbours and animals. A mower that is out from morning to evening does not cut better, only longer.

Rain and frost pauses belong in the plan as well. Wet grass clogs blades and housing, wheels leave ruts on soaked ground, and driving over frozen turf damages it. Many machines come with a rain sensor or a weather forecast function; where that is missing, simply skipping the mowing window for a day after heavy rain is enough. The values in the table are guide figures for an average domestic garden and depend on grass type, soil and location.
Quiet hours and nature conservation: the legal frame
Outdoor equipment in residential surroundings falls under the Thirty-second Ordinance implementing the Federal Immission Control Act, known as 32. BImSchV. In purely residential areas, small settlement areas, spa areas and on hospital grounds, the equipment listed in the annex must not be operated on Sundays and public holidays at all, nor on weekdays from 20:00 to 7:00 (32. BImSchV). The Umweltbundesamt summarises the same rule for lawn mowers, chainsaws and similar equipment (Umweltbundesamt). Some particularly loud machines such as brush cutters, grass trimmers, leaf blowers and leaf collectors also have a midday quiet period: they must not run from 7:00 to 9:00, from 13:00 to 15:00 and from 17:00 to 20:00 unless they carry the EU Ecolabel (32. BImSchV).
Quiet does not mean permitted
Species protection adds a second layer. Under Section 39 paragraph 1 number 1 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act it is prohibited to wilfully disturb wild animals or to catch, injure or kill them without good reason (Bundesnaturschutzgesetz). A robot mower driving at night through a garden that hedgehogs use regularly therefore moves into delicate territory. Anyone who schedules runs for daytime and blocks the known hiding places is not only being considerate but is also acting in the spirit of that provision.
Politically the topic is moving. NABU is calling for a binding night ban for automated robot mowers from 18:00 to 7:00 (NABU), and individual municipalities have already adopted such rules. Safety for hedgehogs, children and dogs
Battery-powered robotic lawnmowers are covered by the standard DIN EN 50636-2-107 (VDE 0700-107). It addresses the significant hazards arising from these machines and their peripheral devices and applies to battery voltages up to 75 volts DC; the responsible body is the committee DKE/UK 514.3 for garden and lawn care equipment (DKE). A change from the previous edition introduced an additional safety test with a probe foot representing a child (DKE). At European level, work is under way to anchor a test procedure for hedgehog-safe machines as well – so far there is no uniformly binding proof of that property.
Blade stop
The blade has to stop when the machine is lifted or tilted. Test this deliberately once after setup, wearing gloves, so that you know the reaction time.
Obstacle detection
Bump sensors, ultrasound and cameras detect obstacles with varying success. Flat, motionless objects are the hardest class – and a curled-up hedgehog falls into exactly that category.
Stop button and PIN
The stop button has to be reachable without thinking, and restarting should require a code. That way a child can halt the machine but cannot set it going again.
How different practice looks is shown by the latest comparison: for hedgehog safety, Stiftung Warentest checks whether hedgehog dummies are driven around, whether a time window can be programmed reliably and whether dusk and night hours can be excluded (Stiftung Warentest). Only a single one of the eight cordless machines detected the dummy reliably, and for seven of the eight the testers could award no better than a satisfactory or adequate rating for hedgehog safety (Stiftung Warentest). The safety tests use a probe foot simulating a crawling child and a beech rod 4 centimetres in diameter representing a child's arm (Stiftung Warentest). From all this follows the most important sentence in this guide: rely on the schedule, not on the sensors alone.
- Set the mowing window for the late morning and afternoon and consistently leave out dusk and night
- Walk the lawn briefly before every start: collect toys, garden tools, clothes pegs and animals
- Do an evening round across the lawn and check whether hedgehogs or toads have moved in
- Do not leave dogs and small children unsupervised on the lawn during the mowing window
- Leave ground-level gaps in the fence open so hedgehogs can leave the garden when the machine starts
- After every storm and before the first cut in spring, search the area for branches and stones
Theft protection, app and firmware
A robot mower sits in the garden, freely accessible, all day long. Theft protection therefore belongs to the initial setup and not on the list of things to do later. Almost all machines come with at least a PIN prompt, many with location tracking and an alarm triggered by lifting.
Set a PIN
Change the factory setting straight away and note the code somewhere your partner knows about too. Without a PIN, a stolen machine can easily be reused.
Enable tracking
Machines with satellite positioning report location changes to the app. Also switch on the lift alarm and check once that the message really arrives on the phone.
Set up a second phone
Install the app on both smartphones in the household. That way anyone can stop the machine when there are visitors in the garden, and you do not depend on a single phone.
Firmware updates are easily overlooked, although they improve navigation, obstacle detection and safety functions. Switch on automatic updates or check manually at the start of the season and before storage. A stable network during the update matters: if the connection drops mid-process, a second attempt may be needed. Choose notifications deliberately
Winter break and maintenance
The end of the season decides what condition the machine will be in when it starts again in spring. Moisture, frost and a deeply discharged battery are the three most common causes of expensive surprises. Storing the mower properly takes barely an hour.
- Clean the housing, wheels and blade disc, keeping the water jet away from the charging contacts and following the manufacturer's cleaning instructions.
- Check the blades and replace them if needed; blunt blades tear the grass instead of cutting it and increase power consumption.
- Charge the battery to the level recommended by the manufacturer, usually a medium state of charge, and store the machine dry and frost-free.
- Disconnect the charging station from the mains, clean the contacts and cover them; on cable systems, check the joints for corrosion.
- Leave the boundary wire in the ground, but inspect the visible sections for damage before the leaves cover them.
- At the start of the season, update the firmware, set the schedule again and watch the first run before automatic operation continues.
If you leave the mower in an unheated shed over winter, at least bring the battery indoors where it can be removed. For built-in batteries, a frost-free cellar room helps. A battery that has once been deeply discharged permanently loses capacity, which shows up in spring as shorter runs and more frequent charging breaks.
The most common setup mistakes
- Letting the mower run at night or at dusk – the biggest risk for hedgehogs and the most common source of friction with neighbours.
- Putting the charging station in the darkest corner because it is out of the way there – and then dealing with failed docking attempts every day.
- Adding no-go zones only after something has happened instead of leaving out pond, beds and sandpit from the start.
- Not checking WLAN coverage at the station's location and later blaming the app for being unreliable.
- Choosing a cutting height that is too low in order to mow less often – with moss, brown patches and grounding blades as the result.
- Postponing PIN, tracking and firmware updates and installing the app on a single phone only.
