Public domain

In short and in plain language

Public domain means the copyright on a work has run out.

Anyone may then use the work freely.

This is true for many old books, for example.

Definition
A work is in the public domain when its copyright protection has expired. It may then be used freely, for example as an e-book of an old classic.
